Who Should Sit on the Iron Throne.
Hey Thronies- which is the supposed official name for Game of Thrones fans. I think we can do better than that, perhaps “GOThics” or something more fun. Anyway, that is a topic for another day. Today, while we await the second coming of our glorious series which will be descending from the stars in April 2019- a little over 370 days but who is counting? I think we should have this conversation: Who Should Sit on the Iron Throne?
Wait, before screaming “Jon Snow” as a lot of us would, sentiments aside, who do you think has the abilities and skills required to be on the Iron Throne and be King of the Seven Kingdoms?
First of all, I think the Iron Throne would be the least of our and the characters’ worries in season eight, why? Well, one word- WHITE WALKERS! That’s two words but you get the drift.
Remember that at the end of season seven, the white walkers have taken one of Daenerys’ dragon for themselves and have infiltrated the wall that is supposed to keep them out. Even though a vast majority of the people of Westeros do not know it yet, they are already on the right track to death. Thus, the Lannister, Stark, Targaryen and Greyjoy scramble for the throne would not matter anymore, soon.
Notwithstanding, if I had the honour of deciding who will sit on the Iron Throne, I’m going with Tyrion Lannister. I would have gone for Cersei and all her evil Queen drama, because, damn, that woman is something, however, for the sake of morality, I am going with Tyrion.
Now, Tyrion Lannister, dwarfism aside, is a tall glass of wisdom and intelligence. His intellectual prowess is reflected in his witty dialogue sprinkled through the episodes. He is the youngest son of Tywin Lannister and younger brother of Jaime and Cersei Lannister (I like to call them evil twins).
Perhaps because of his physical hindrance, Tyrion is one that understands the importance of the mind. He sees it as a very important tool especially for getting out of tight corners, and rightly so. Several times, we see the way he manipulates his superior intellect to “overthrow” those who have initially looked on him. Remember in season one, episode two, “The Kingsroad” in which Jon Snow asks Tyrion why he reads so much, he simply says:
…I must do my part for the honour of my house; wouldn’t you agree? But how? Well, my brother has his sword, and I have my mind. And a mind needs books like a sword needs a whetstone. That’s why I read so much, Jon Snow.
Now, in all honesty, what other character could match him in wit? Silence…
Your favourites could never!
The Imp, the halfman, the demon monkey, and the dwarf of Casterly Rock are just a few of the numerous names Tywin is called simply because he is a dwarf. His father and Cersei also share a deep hatred for him because he seems to be a drab on the family’s name. Additionally, because their mother died while giving birth to him. All these have made Tyrion develop a tough exterior especially with jokes pertaining to his dwarfism. However, despite his unending hardship, Tyrion still finds a place of sympathy and kindness particularly for people with physical defects like Brandon Stark.
I will be the first to admit that Tyrion is not all books and intelligence. He is flawed, human. As King T’Chaka, father of T’Challa in Black Panther, “It is tough for a good man to be king”.
Alcohol is perhaps Tyrion’s greatest weakness. He seems to use it as a coping mechanism for the sorrow that perpetually follows him about.
Also, notice how he became a “beast” after Shae- his lover, sleeps with his father. He ends up killing his father and Shae in retaliation. Thus, he is extremely dangerous provoked and pushed to the edge – a great trait for a King in my opinion.
Now, this is only a brief compilation of why I think Tyrion should be King as opposed to Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen who are favourites for the throne. He has the perfect blend of experience, wisdom, ruthlessness and kindness. So, if you are asking, “is this your king?” Yes, Tyrion of house Lannister is my King, first of his name and protector of the realm.
Let me know who your King is in the comment section. Thank you!
